Will Smith Studio To Release A Karate Kid Series Sequel.


THR is reporting that Will Smith’s Sony Pictures Television Studios-based Overbrook Entertainment, is developing a Karate Kid sequel that will star Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) from the original Karate Kid movie.

The 10-episode half-hour comedy series for subscription service YouTube Red, will be called Cobra Kai and will be set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley.

According to THR, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg will write the script and exec produce. Macchio and Zabka will co-exec produce. Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment will exec produce with James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett overseeing for the company.

The 1894 Karate Kid martial arts drama film was produced by Jerry Weintraub, directed by John G. Avildsen, written by Robert Mark Kamen, and stars Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and Elisabeth Shue. The film became the first in a series, spawning three sequels, and remake in 2010 starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. Cobra Kai is expected to debut in 2018 on YouTube Red.
